This short independent chapter briefly talks about a scary mysterious old Chinaman who did the same thing, came by just at dusk and crossed the street and went through the oprning between Western Biological and the Hediondo Cannery and then disappear, every day. Most people left him as far away as they could because they were afraid of the Chinaman.
No one knew exactly who he was because no one talked to him. Some people thought he was God and some people thought he was Death. A brave boy named Andy tried to catch his attention once and he did. But when he looked into the Chinaman's eyes, he got into a dream-like place. Andy felt very lonely and that loneliness made him whimper. Andy then close his eyes and got back into the reality again. This is the only contact that people in Cannery Row ever made with the Chinaman and people still had no idea about who the Chinaman was.
The purpose of narrating the story of this weird man is beyond physical level but up to a spiritual level of mythology that the people lived in.
