This
chapter is mainly about a woman named Dora who is the manager of her whore
house Bear Flag Restaurant and a man named William who was the previous
watchman of Bear Flag Restaurant before he committed suicide. Dora is a great woman
with flaming orange hair and green evening dresses. Being against the law, she
leads a ticklish existence and must be twice as law abiding as anyone else. Although
in this occasion, Dora is still respected, honest and generous, paying bills for hungry children and jobless
fathers even during the depression. But things don’t go that well with
William. He was a pathetic guy and was the watchman before the present watchman
Alfy, who is more welcomed than him, took over. He has a dark and ugly face and
a mouse twisted with brooding. And he was also a dark and lonesome-looking man. He
wanted to integrate into society and joined the group of Mac and boys, but he
failed again and again because they hated him, a pimp. He tried to find other
people such as Dora and a prostitute in Dora’s brothel named Eva, and got
nothing but carelessness and yelling. And he finally committed suicide when
meeting the last people, the Greek, by using the Greek's ice pick snapping into heart.
