At first The Palace Flophouse was mere a warehouse and there were no
furniture. Mack and the boys used to lie on the floor directly when they wanted to sleep. However they gradually started to make the place better. They gathered
furniture from other places, even carried a large stove into their house.
Through their efforts, The Palace Flophouse became comfortable home.
Eddie is one of them, and he was working as a
bartender. He could bring some alcohol cocktail into the house, using his jug.
Because of this contribution, he is respected by everybody, and no one asked
him to do housework.
Then
they started conversation with drinking Eddie’s jugs. Over a bottle of
"punch" that Eddie has scavenged from the bar where he works, the
boys decided that they wanted to throw a surprise party for Doc. But the
whiskey is a little expensive, so they decided to do some jobs to earn money.
Then Mack came up with gathering many flogs at a place up Carmel Valley, which
Doc would buy from them.
